How to Choose the Best Shower Head
What type of shower head is right for you?
Rain shower heads are the most luxurious type of shower head out there, which is why you’ll likely find them at high-end hotels and resorts. But you don’t need to spend a fortune at costly hotels to have the same shower experience anymore.
Homeowners and shower enthusiasts alike are starting to install them in their own bathrooms. They envelope your body with a torrent of warm water that feels like natural rainfall. Unlike the other types, you can choose to mount them from the ceiling like the Hansgrohe 27474001 or on the wall like the Moen S6320. Both provide excellent value and will give you a soaking like no other, while keeping within the 2.5 GPM (Gallons Per Minute) standard.
Having good water pressure is the key to having a great shower. If you’re sick of having suds left in your hair after you’ve rinsed over and over again you might be a victim of low water pressure. Sometimes this can be fixed by upgrading your shower head.
High pressure shower heads are designed to give you the maximum amount of water pressure and are often the difference between having a pathetic shower routine or a rejuvenating one. You’ll also save time by being able to rinse quicker, allowing you to sleep in an extra few minutes. Who doesn’t want that?
Our top rated shower head overall is the high pressure Speakman S-2005-HB. Combining affordability and luxury, a high pressure shower head is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to improve how you shower.
These days being environmentally friendly is more important than ever which is why many people are making the switch to low flow shower heads. They have the ability to give you a full, invigorating shower while using about half the amount of water than a regular shower head.
It used to be that low flow shower heads just weren’t up to par with their regular counterparts. But with advancing technology they’ve become just as good while saving money on water and heating costs.
If you’re someone who enjoys taking long, hot showers but hate getting the bill at the end of the month, consider a low flow shower head. We recommend the High Sierra line of shower heads. While it’s a bit more expensive then say the Niagara Earth Massage, their customer server, the solid metal build and monthly cost savings more than make up for it.
Hand held shower heads offer the best of both worlds. You can place it in the holder when you need to rinse hands-free or you can take it out to get at those hard to reach areas.
Some offer dual heads, like the Hydroluxe 24 Function, that work either together for an intense shower experience or individually to conserve water. The best hand held shower head will have a flexible hose that is capable of reaching all areas of the shower and preferably have multiple settings.
A handheld shower head is the most functional type. It’s ideal people with mobility issues and for those with small kids or pets because it makes washing a breeze.
Transform your boring shower routine into an incredible light show! LED shower heads will provide you with a soothing shower while boosting your mood at the same time.
Not only that but some LED shower heads have a temperature sensor built right in that changes colors with the temperature so you can get in the shower at the optimal time. These are also great for kids who normally hate taking showers, just turn on the faucet and watch their eyes light up. The best part is that they’re powered by the water itself, no batteries required.
Out of all the options out there, the Dreamspa LED shower head is the top performer in every category.
Shower panels will turn your shower routine into a daily spa-like adventure.
Offering multiple nozzles from all different directions you’ll never want to leave the shower. Typically the best shower panel will have a handheld nozzle, a rain shower head and several horizontal nozzles to give you an experience like you’ve never had before. They do tend to be a bit more expensive but once you try it, you’ll never go back to a regular shower head again.
Some panels even offer a waterfall option like the Decor Star 004-SS, that pools the water together and drenches you with a deluge of warm water. You have to experience it for yourself.
If you live in an area with less than desirable water you might want to consider getting a shower filter.
They can dramatically improve the quality of your water by removing chlorine, sulfur, heavy metals and other chemicals that can affect your health. Not to mention your hair and skin will look and feel healthier. Installing a shower filter is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to improve your health and thus your quality of life.
The Culligan WSH-C125 is the best option for removing the most unwanted chemicals while maintaining solid water pressure.
When choosing the best shower head for your home keep in mind the different spray patterns available. There are a number of different patterns to pick from: from near torrential downpour to a nice soothing mist. Some shower heads offer a variety of spray settings while others keep to the basics and only have one. Keep in mind that some brands have different names for their settings but generally they all fall into one of the following eight categories.
A full body spray is the standard for most shower heads. All nozzles are being used to provide you with a – you guessed it – full body shower. There is nothing too special about this pattern. If you’re just looking for a quick shower before work this spray setting is all you need. It gets the job done.
Full Body + Massage
For those who enjoy spending a little more time in the shower, maybe to relax and unwind, a full body + massage spray setting might be what you’re looking for. It offers the invigorating full body spray plus a focused pulsating torrent of water in the center to help sooth your body. It’s a perfect shower for people who workout or have a physically demanding job or for anyone who likes to loosen up. Just turn on the warm water and let the spray do the rest.
The massage setting is a fantastic option if you want to sooth aching muscles. This pattern focuses the entire stream into the middle to provide you with a powerful, pulsating spray. For aches and pains, this one is preferred because all the water pressure is concentrated in the middle to give you a much more invigorating massage compared to the full body + spray combo. A handheld shower head is ideal for this spray pattern because you can direct the flow wherever the hose will reach.
Want the option to save water without buying a low flow shower head? Then the water saving setting is the one for you. You’ll save water and money while not being restricted to the setting if you want to change it.
The mist pattern forces the spray to break up into even smaller droplets to give you a warm, gentle spray experience. One thing to remember is that because of the tiny droplets the water tends to cool a lot quicker which makes it great on a hot summer day but not so great for those cold winter mornings.
Found only in rain shower heads this setting drenches you like no other and is the most popular pattern among 5-star hotels and resorts. It’ll set you a back a bit in terms price but it’s definitely worth it.
Drench + Massage
For the most luxurious shower you’ll ever have the drench + massage setting will engulf you with a deluge of water while a focused torrent soothes your body into a state of bliss. This setting is found on rain shower heads and offers the most coverage of any of the settings. Be careful with this setting or you’ll never want to leave the shower! Personally I recommend this as the best shower head spray.
This one is pretty self-explanatory. The pause feature is common on low flow shower heads so you can conserve as much water as possible. While you lather up just turn it to the pause setting and the water will slow to a trickle. When you’re ready to rinse turn it back to your preferred setting and the water will start to flow again. It’s a great feature for the environmentally conscious.
I added this one after trying out some shower panels and it explains itself pretty well. The water pools together on a slope and slides down your body like a waterfall.
Installing your New Shower Head
Installing a shower head is one of the easiest home additions you can do. Even if you have no experience, just follow these simple steps and you’ll be using your new shower head in no time.
What you’ll need:
- Plumbers tape
- Pliers or and adjustable wrench
- Your new shower head
- Remove the old shower head by turning it counter clockwise (to the left). If it’s stuck try using a pair of pliers or an adjustable wrench for extra grip.
- Clean the threads so there is no tape or other gunk stuck in between.
- Re-wrap the thread with plumbers tape. Ideally 3 wraps should be enough. If your new shower head has a rubber gasket there is no need to add tape. (The instructions that come with the shower head should tell you)
- Install your new shower head by screwing it on clockwise (to the right) until its nice and snug.
- Tighten it a bit more with the pliers or wrench. Make sure to wrap the part where you grip with a piece of cloth so that you don’t scratch the finish.
- Turn it on and enjoy! If there are leaks coming from the thread try either tightening it a bit more or add a few more layers of tape.

Get More from your Shower Head
Psst! Do you want to get the most out of your shower head? Here’s a little secret. By removing the flow limiter on the inside you can drastically improve the water pressure and the flow rate, giving you a much stronger and well-deserved shower. If you have low water pressure in your house, give it a try to see if it increases the flow.
What is a flow limiter?
A flow limiter or water restrictor is a little piece of plastic on the inside of your shower head designed to reduce the flow of water to 2.5 GPM (gallons per minute) which is in accordance to the National Energy Act. All new shower heads must have them.
Will my water bill go up?
Probably. Removing the limiter means you’ll be using more than 2.5 GPM. For some it’s totally worth it for others it’s fine right out of the box. Personally I’m okay with the 2.5 GPM limit.
How do I remove the flow limiter?
- Remove the shower head using the instructions above.
- Inspect the shower head connection. If it has a screen, use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove it. If you don’t have pliers, try to use a bent paperclip to pry it out. You’ll be putting this back in so don’t wreck it.
- Using the same tools pry up the o-ring located inside. Try not to damage it or you may have leaks.
- Remove the flow limiter. It should look like a plastic disc with holes in it. Don’t worry about damaging it.
- Insert the o-ring back into the shower where you found it. Make sure it fits nicely in there.
- Put the shower screen back in.
- Re-install the shower head like in the video above.

Material and Finishes
If the physical look and feel of your shower head is important to you, you’re in luck. These days there is a huge variety of different finishes and material to choose from so you can match your bathroom decor.
Material – There are two main type of materials used for the actual build of a shower head. Plastic and metal. For most people the material itself isn’t that important as long as it does the job.
- Plastic. It’s a much cheaper option but also feels and looks a bit cheaper. It’s lighter and wont rust if you accidentally scratch the finish a bit. Because of the weight benefits most handheld shower heads are made of plastic.
- Metal. For those who want the best shower head build quality and look, metal is the way to go. It’s more expensive but it will also last a lot longer. Most high-end shower heads are made of metal.
Finishes – This is where your own personal style and preferences really come into play. It used to be you had the choice between cheap white plastic or chrome and if it didn’t match your bathroom interior, oh well, deal with it. Today there are a plethora of awesome finishes that will suit even the most fancy bathrooms. Just to name a few:
- Brushed chrome
- Brushed nickel
- Polished brass
- Oil rubbed bronze
- Antique bronze
Keep in mind that anything polished or chrome will leave watermarks and fingerprints. If this is important to you look for something with a brushed finish.
Environmental Concerns, EPA and WaterSense
The National Energy Act was introduced in 1993 in response to the growing concern of available water. Showers make up a sizable amount of the average families water bill – up to 17%.
As a result, shower heads are limited to a flow rate of 2.5 Gallons Per Minute (GPM). In some states it’s limited to 2.0 GPM.
If everyone in the U.S. installed a shower head with a 2.0 GPM flow rate, we’d save an estimated :
- 260 billion gallons of water
- $2.2 billion in water bills
- $2.6 billion in energy costs needed to heat the water
Some companies like High Sierra offer even lower flow rates of 1.5 GPM and are dedicated to providing you with a powerful shower experience without sacrificing quality.
Just something to keep in mind.
The WaterSense program was introduced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2006 and is designed to encourage water efficiency.
Buying a shower head with a WaterSense label means you’ll be saving money, water and helping the environment at the same time. In fact, the average family could save 370 kilowatt hours of electricity annually. That’s enough to power a house for 13 days!
